Creating a New Raised Bed Garden

We are excited to embark on the journey of establishing a new raised bed garden measuring an impressive 40 feet by 40 feet. This garden will not only provide us with a sustainable source of fresh vegetables, allowing us to enjoy homegrown produce that is free from harmful pesticides and chemicals, but it will also serve as a wonderful opportunity to engage with nature and promote biodiversity in our local ecosystem. The raised beds will be constructed from wood. We chose to use wood as asthetically they are more pleasing, and warm up the soil and insulate better, than metal. This is based on our experience in Arizona, and we can only imagine that here in Michigan the temperature fluctuations will be more extreme, so wood it is.

Raised beds also allow for better drainage and soil aeration, which are crucial for healthy plant growth. This is also the quickest way for us to get the garden up and going with little to weeding needing to be done as the season progresses.

In addition to the practical benefits of growing our own food, this garden will significantly enhance the beauty of our outdoor space. We envision a vibrant landscape filled with an array of colorful vegetables, herbs, and perhaps even some flowering plants that will attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The design of the garden will include pathways for easy access and maintenance, allowing us to stroll through the beds and appreciate the flourishing greenery and the fruits of our labor. Furthermore, we plan to incorporate companion planting techniques to maximize yield and create a harmonious ecosystem within the garden.

As we embark on this gardening adventure, we are also looking forward to the educational opportunities it will provide for our family and friends. We hope to involve our children in the planting, and harvesting processes of our gardens, in hopes to foster a deeper appreciation for where our food comes from and the importance of sustainable practices.

Reasons to Grow Our Own Food

  • Food Security: Growing our own food ensures we have access to fresh produce, reducing dependence on grocery stores and mitigating the impact of supply chain disruptions.

  • Delicious Food: Homegrown vegetables are often more flavorful and nutritious than store-bought options. We can enjoy the taste of freshly picked produce right from our garden.

  • Beautiful Gardens: A well-maintained garden adds aesthetic appeal to our property, providing a serene and inviting space for relaxation and enjoyment.
